Curious to see how you rank among the many other voice-actor hopefuls out there? Well, why stop at “wondering” if you’ve got talent, and go out there and find out for yourself!
The thing is, talent isn’t merely confined to our inherent abilities, though that plays a part. Voiceover guru Susan Berkley has said that talent is something we develop after working really hard to nourish our God-given potential. “It’s the magnetism we give off when we are passionate and focused about our work,” so don’t write yourself off if you’ve been told that you don’t have talent. You can make it for yourself.
It’s understandable to feel discouraged the first time someone tells you you’re not the right fit or don’t have the right flavor, sound, age, ethnicity, etc. But when you allow that past experience to dictate your success, you’re holding yourself back from professional destiny. Limiting yourself to existing talent is, according to Susan Berkley, “one of the many excuses we use to relinquish control over our lives.”
The fact of the matter is, whether you have talent or not, you can polish it, nurture it, and make it better. Obstacles will arise on the path to success, but you can overcome them through perseverance and proper training. Below are some guidelines to get you started:
Never say you’re too old.
One recent success in the voiceover world is a grandfather who sold his painting business to start his VO career. He worked his way from the bottom, training with top-notch coaches, learning the best marketing techniques, recording high quality demo tapes, and through hard work, he created his own talent.
Never say it’s too late.
Another success story waited until he retired to finally do what he had always dreamed of doing. He built recording studios in his house and within five years, had built an extremely successful VO business from the comfort of his own home.
Never give up.
If you don’t have the talent you think you need to propel you into a stratosphere of fame and glory, don’t give up trying. There are people out there who have “made it,” so enlist their and MY help and training to guide you along the way.
