There is a book and a Bible study by Timothy Keller called “The Prodigal God”. I first heard about it when he spoke at a Leadership Summit that I attended (along with 160,000 others) via satellite through my church. I had never led a Bible study before, but after hearing him speak about this book, it was quite apparent I was supposed to lead one on this book…and so I did.
In preparation for the study I decided to begin by not even talking about the book and that specific study but to start with a discussion on parables. The dictionary defines parable as: a story (especially in the Bible) that is intended to teach a lesson. All I knew about parables was that they were stories in the Bible. I was familiar with some of them and the story of the prodigal son was one of them. But as I prepared for our Bible study I discovered that there were 72 parables in the Bible. That amazed me, so the first night of our Bible study I handed out a list of all 72 parables along with where you could find them in scripture. There were 8 of us in the group and I had each person select one they weren’t familiar with to read aloud.
The next morning, after my 1st Bible study, I had an email from Voices.com with a link to their Blog, “Vox Daily”. The Blog had an interview with actor Jason Hildebrand entitled The Prodigal Trilogy. Jason had created a one-man, stage play on The Prodigal Son where he plays the father, the elder son, and the younger son. When I saw that there was a DVD available I bought it immediately to share with the group.
Everything that happened, from the Leadership Summit, to preparing for Bible study, to the Voices.com blog, to Jason’s DVD. I mean, seriously…that’s a God thing and I couldn’t wait for the next session of our study to begin.
I am filled with gratitude.
