No matter what your outlook on life has been in the past, now is the time to adopt extreme optimism. If you want to succeed in the voiceover world, you must believe “the cup is always half-full.” Every person in your life is an opportunity: those you know well or hardly know, those you haven’t talked to in years or people you’ve NEVER spoken to before—they can all be turned into referrals, and in this business, a good referral is money.
Here are some tips on turning a stable referral base into cash:
- Develop a marketing plan.
Sit down and ask yourself: who do I know that could become either a source of work or a referral? Make a list of everyone who could potentially require your services, whether it be someone in the advertising, automotive, or non-profit industries. Before writing someone off, assume each person is an opportunity.
- Reach out to your list of people ASAP.
Once you’ve drafted an initial list of people to contact, reach out as quickly as possible and designate follow-up times to stay in touch. Never leave the meetings up to chance but rather schedule them into your calendar.
- Constantly seek referrals to fill your top client spots.
While you may have a good run for several years with one company, don’t get too cozy. You should always be seeking to expand your referral base in case one of your top companies falls off the wagon.
- Be aggressive to take the opportunities right in front of you.
If you don’t ask, you won’t receive, but if you do ask, you might be surprised by the answer. Often the best opportunities come when you least expect it, like being laid off a full-time job. On your way out the door, you just might pick up a client or two!
- Keep your business fresh in people’s minds.
With every email you send, sign off with some kind of notation indicating that your business grows through customer referrals and that you would be happy to receive referrals at any time. That way, if your clients weren’t thinking of you already, they will be after reading your email!
